As I continue to grow as an educator coming to an understanding on assessment is key to being a successful educator. The article What a difference a word Makes, was a informative article and very important. At least I thought it was. It was a great learning tool, and an article that I would like to hold on to. Students and current educators should read this article and continue to find more articles on this topic. Some of the main areas and points that I found important in this article are below.
1. Clear Purposes: I think a lot of people don't understand the purpose and idea of assessments. Being able to clearly understand the relationship between assessment and student motivation is important. Also, another point that I found that was good for educators was that the teachers uses assessment to inform someone about that student's achievement. Personally, I have found using the "sandwich" method works really well especially when talking to parents.
2. Clear Targets: Educators need to plan ahead to be able to understand what their end goal needs to be as a class and individually. This article has some good points on what "clear targets" educators should have. One I really liked was teachers should select learning targets focused on the most important things students need to know and be able to do. I believe setting high expectations is important but reasonable ones so the students do reach achievement and still have room to grow.
3. Sound Design: Before reading this article I wasn't really sure what they meant by sound and design. Being able to design assessments that work well is important. Not only do you have to be able to write assessment questions that students can understand but finding a variety of ways to have assessments.
4. Effective Communication: This section should be understood by all educators. Why have assessments if you do not know how to manage them.
5. Student involvement: I really think teachers need to have a strong communication with their students about their goals.
Overall, I recommend that article for other educators. I believe it was a very informative read.
The second article that I read on assessments was also good. Right off the bat, I could say I would have benefited. I was that student who was always behind and needed the extra help. Being placed in the "loser" category. To me that was really hard. I think when I was a student I felt that the teachers did not think I was placed in that category but I could see it and see it in the teachers reaction after assessments. I think if the teacher would have met with me and we would have set goals and had more of a positive conversation I would have enjoyed school more and excelled more. After reading the feelings in the losing streak category it did bring back some memories of not understanding material back in my younger school days. That is another reason why I can't wait to be a teacher. I want to make every child feel like they are in the Winning streak category.
