The article “Understand” by Rick Garlikov, explains what is means for a student to actually understand the material that is taught in the classroom. From a students standpoint when you are able to directly explain what you were just taught or currently learning is that actually understand the topic? From my standpoint, I believe a student should be able to apply the information they are “understanding” and be able to recite the information in their own words. A student is taught to memorize material from the first day they start school. As future educators we need to remember that we need to not have them memorize material but be able to apply the material they are taught. The author, Rick Garlikov, defines understanding as “ seeing” or having insight on how it “works”.
I found that this article was very repetitive. This article provided many different examples but I found it to be long and boring. After finishing the article I felt exhausted from reading paragraphs over and over again. There were some good points that were made from this article but I feel that it could of been summarized differently.
